How Did Mary Magdalene Become A Prosititute?

“Pope” Gregory “The Great” declared in 591 A. D. that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute based on his own interpretation. There is no evidence or references in the bible that specifically label Mary Magdalene as a prostitute.

“She whom Luke calls the sinful woman, whom John calls Mary, we believe to be Mary from whom seven devils were ejected according to Mark. And what did these seven devils signify, if not all the vices? …It is clear, brothers, that the woman previously used the unguent to perfume her flesh in forbidden acts.”

So Pope Gregory The Great unfounded remark created the legend of Mary Magdalene being a prostitute. What Pope Gregory wanted to do was create an example of someone who had been a “sinner” but turned their ways around, and who had found new life in Christ.

Some 1,400 years later, in 1969, the Catholic church officially corrected Gregory’s label of Mary Magdalene.
