A Chinese manager has been arrested for using grease from swill, sewage and recycled industrial oil to make edible lard - this the latest health scare to hit China.
Let’s face it. While the Chinese economy has been booming at 10% a year for the last decade and there is some reasonable quality stuff coming out of China now… there always seems to be some guy over there looking to cut corners in some outrageous crazy way.
Health officials also detected “toxic pesticide” in lard produced by the Fanchang Grease Factory.
“They wholesaled the product to retailers across the country, and the retailers sold it to clients, including hotels and restaurants,” the paper said.
This makes you wonder about the food you’re going to be eating when you go to China and any food that is exported from there. Obviously China can’t control these loose cannons looking to make an extra buck. (How can you controll everyone when you’re trying to control over a billion people?)
Since opening in September 2005, the plant had bought more than 170 metric tons of recycled grease to produce an average of six metric tons of lard daily. A night-time raid found 37,600 kg of raw materials and 5,300 kg of lard. Thats a ratio of 7:1
This after at least 13 babies died in 2005 from malnutrition in the China’s poor eastern province of Anhui after being fed fake baby milk powder.
