Riyo Mori Miss Japan 2007 has won Miss Universe 2007. You can see Riyo Mori being crowned by Miss Puerto Rico Zuleyka Rivera Miss Universe 2006 later on (she actually drops the crown)

More on the crowning soon but first there was some controversy last year as some thought last years runner up Miss Japan 2006 Kurara Chibana should have won over Miss Puerto Rico Zuleyka Rivera. Apparently an interpreter missed a key point in Kurara Chibana’s response during the final interview portion of the competition.

The last time anyone won from Japan won the pageant was in 1959 when Akiko Kojima also from Japan won.

I actually thought Riyo Mori had a good chance after seeing some preliminary promotional photos. Previously I though Miss USA 2007 Rachel Renee Smith had a good chance but she fell over in the evening gown section.

Riyo Mori is a dancer and the daughter of a dance school operator from the small town of Shizuoka at the base of Mount Fuji.

Riyo Mori wears a black boho chic style dress with purple crimson bands and paisley.

Boho chic is pretty last season but the new Miss Universe 2007 manages to still look spectacular.

Runners up were the sweet Honey Lee Miss Korea 2007, Ly Jonaitis Miss Venezuela 2007, Natalie Guimares Miss Brazil 2007 and of course Rachel Renee Smith Miss USA 2007.
