Founding Wired Editor Kevin Kelly reckons by 2015 the internet as we know it will be long forgotten and replaced by a “globe-spanning artificial consciousness”.
This article continues on the theme of humanity becoming more machine like. Why am I writing this article when I could be out surfing primo waves?
Humans are not machines. They are mammals made of flesh.
The chronic stress that is a common part of peoples daily lives is partly a result of carrying out mundane repetitive tasks in a machine like manner is one of the reasons why diseases like cancer are becoming more and more common.
Chronic stress is a feature of the modern daily lifestyle. We carry out repetitive tasks in a routine manner on a daily basis. Routine is what causes less new meaningful memories to be created.
Thats why you might find that another year has suddenly come and gone.
You’re doing the same old stuff over and over again.
We weren’t designed for this kind of routine lifestyle. We evolved in an environment that required all of our senses and all of our thinking and planning abilities just to survive.
Stress wasn’t chronic. Stress was acute.
Every now and then we had to run away from a cave lion. Or hunt and kill a beast for food.
But in between those times there was a lot of lazing (and no doubt fooling) around.
If there was an threat then the flight or fight response came into play.
The flight or fight response cannot be effected when stress is of a chronic nature. The way that it is in the modern society.
Thats one of the reasons that more people get cancer today than ever before. We’re not designed to be plugged into machines 24/7 and exposed to that level of chronic stress.
Some people think we will live longer than ever before but I think this generation will be the first in a long time which will live less longer than the previous generations.
