Anshe Chung makes $US1 million in real money playing “Second Life”

Anshe Chung has turned an initial outlay of $9.95 into virtual assets worth at least $US1 million in real money.

Chung an avatar who has featured in Business Week has shown that the property boom is not limited to the real world.

The Anshe Chung avatar is owned by Ailin Graef who is originally from China but now resides in Germany with her husband.

Anshe’s Second Life real estate portfolio is equivalent to 36 sq km in size. People pay real cash $US100 to $US1000-plus to own a plot of land in Second Life.

Second Life has grown super fast from 70,000 members to 1.6 million participants in one year. People download the free software and creat online personas called avatars.

In typical property developer style, Anshe buys large blocks of “land” which she improves, subdivides, and then either rents or sells the smaller plots.

Anshe’s also owns virtual “cash”, “shares”, several “shopping malls”, “chain stores” and “brands”.

Ailin Graef’s expanded her virtual business by opening an office in the Chinese city of Wuhan where 21 people are employed to create content.

So people just hang out at this Second Life. Crazy stuff. Making a million dollars from a computer game in a few years. Who would have thought.
