The Three Doshas
The controlling principles of the laws of nature are called the Doshas. They combine in different permutations in each individual. The idea is that all three Doshas, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, are balanced. Imbalances will be addressed through diet, herbs, aromatherapy, exercise, meditation and lifestyle.
Vata is related to change, physical and mental activity, physical movement, excitement, circulation and the intestines and colon. When Vata is balanced it is expressed in intelligence, enthusiasm, quickness, lightness, humour and balanced function of neuro physiology. Vata out of balance can mean anxiety, tiredness, constipation, pain, insomnia, joint problems, forgetfulness and disordered functioning in physiological systems.
Pitta is related to energy metabolism, heat, drive, emotion, inner and outer vision, digestion, function of eyes, skin and heart. When balanced it manifests as clear intellect, accurate speech, insight, initiative and command. Out of balance Pitta means irritability, impatiencDiagnosis is through the pulse, which is said to reflect all patterns of balance and imbalance in the body, mind, emotions and consciousness.e, poor digestion, diarrhea and disorders related to heat including eye and skin disorders.
Kapha is about processing matter and the material structure of the body. Balanced it means stability, resistance, calm, balance and strength. Out of balance there could be dullness, lethargy, depression, jealousy, over attachment, respiratory disorders and mucus conditions.
Combinations of these qualities exist in us all. If any are out of balance our health is affected. Click for more information about Maharishi Ayurveda
